Home Energy Measurements

How does you home compare to the one next door?

When we buy a car a lot of unbiased facts are available to help us make decisions. They are displayed right on the side window of the car.
Three key questions we all ask:
1. How safe is it?
2. What is the warranty?
3. How many mpg will it deliver?

Now we can have the same information about our homes.

As the cost of gasoline increased  the cost of running your car became a big issue. The same is true for our homes. Well built, well ventilated, water and energy efficient homes are safe, durable and cost effective.

Today when you are buying, selling or living in a home you need to know the cost of running the home every month and where to look for the best ways to decrease the monthly running costs and improve the safety and comfort at the same time

The Home Energy Rating - HERS Index - Calculates the energy  "MPG" for our Homes.

Government approved and certified professionals using on site tests and software can give you this detailed information.

Not only will it show home much energy your house uses today, but also where improvements can be made and how your home compares to others.

A Home Energy Rating and inspection can be conducted:

From Plans - allows you to make key decisions before the construction begins include investments in windows, HVAC systems, site selection and home orientation. A great investment.

During construction and renovations - measure how well those air ducts were installed. Fixed problems before they are covered by dry wall.

Completed and existing homes - comprehensive measurement of total home performance and suggestions of the most cost effective improvements to save money and improve the air quality and comfort of your home.
When buying a home what you want to know what your mortgage will be but what about the monthly cost of running the home.

Energy Star program . ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy helping us all save money and protect the environment through energy efficient products and practices. These are easy, particle and cost effective steps than everyone can take to have a positive impact on their personal resource usage.

Home Energy Rating system -  A home energy rating involves an analysis of a home’s construction plans and onsite inspections. Based on the home’s plans, the Home Energy Rater uses an energy efficiency software package to perform an energy analysis of the home’s design. This analysis yields a projected, pre-construction HERS Index. The rater conducts onsite inspections, typically including a blower door test (to test the leakiness of the house) and a duct test (to test the leakiness of the ducts). Results of these tests, along with inputs derived from the plan review, are used to generate the HERS Index score for the home.

The HERS Index

The HERS Index is a scoring system established by the Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET) in which a home built to the specifications of the HERS Reference Home (based on the 2006 International Energy Conservation Code) scores a HERS Index of 100, while a net zero energy home scores a HERS Index of 0. The lower a home’s HERS Index, the more energy efficient it is in comparison to the HERS Reference Home.

Each 1-point decrease in the HERS Index corresponds to a 1% reduction in energy consumption compared to the HERS Reference Home. Thus a home with a HERS Index of 85 is 15% more energy efficient than the HERS Reference Home and a home with a HERS Index of 80 is 20% more energy efficient.
